Target toaster is getting $8.5M from Walmart, and a Target light bulb
Walmart announced Thursday it has agreed to pay $8 million to settle allegations it paid $14.5 million to the company to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit.
The Justice Department alleges that Walmart violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by paying the company $3 million to fix a defective light bulb.
The company paid another $3.9 million in August to settle the same allegations.
In addition to the $7.5 billion settlement, the Justice Department will receive $1.7 billion from the U.S. Treasury and $3 billion from Walmart for potential future settlements.
The settlement comes on the heels of a federal appeals court ruling in July that found Walmart violated workers’ rights by paying them less than minimum wage for work that was “unnecessary” and “voluntary.”
